$40M Uber Wrongful Death Award, Six Flags X2 Brain Injury Lawsuits, and $15.8M Motorcycle Crash Verdict

California’s September 2026 News Includes Tesla’s Robotaxi Launch, Legal Consequences for Former Mayors in Sexual Abuse Cases, and Thousands of Ve...

September 2026 brought renewed attention to safety and liability concerns as several high-profile personal injury cases affected California residents. One issue that reignited debate was the rise of autonomous vehicles, after Tesla took another step toward a driverless future by launching a robotaxi service without a steering wheel. However, past accidents involving autonomous vehicles continue to raise questions about their safety and who may be held liable when these systems fail.

Corporate and institutional liability also made headlines. Six Flags Magic Mountain faced new lawsuits alleging traumatic brain injuries related to its X2 roller coaster. Days later, the park announced the permanent retirement of the ride. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, a former Sheriff’s Department deputy was sentenced to prison for abusing his position of authority.

Wrongful death cases were another major focus in September. A Placer County jury awarded $15.8 million to the widow of a retired California Highway Patrol officer who died in a motorcycle accident. In addition, an arbitrator awarded $40 million to the parents of a 23-year-old woman who was struck and killed after an Uber driver dropped her off on a California highway.

Beyond these cases, the month was also marked by fatal traffic and bicycle accidents, new developments in sexual abuse cases, and numerous product and food recalls over potential risks to consumers.

Former California Mayors and Harvey Weinstein Face Consequences for Sex Crimes

Practice Area: Sexual Abuse and Assault

Earlier in the month, Robert Brian Bassett, former mayor of Biggs, was sentenced to four years and four months in prison for offenses involving an underage foreign exchange student who stayed at his home between 2020 and 2023. Bassett pleaded no contest to three sex crime charges, and a Butte County judge imposed the maximum sentence.

Meanwhile, cases of sexual misconduct involving municipal leaders also received significant attention. A Sonoma County jury found former Windsor Mayor Dominic Foppoli civilly liable for sexually assaulting seven women over nearly two decades. The jury awarded approximately $13 million in compensatory damages to the victims, including $4.6 million to one of them.

Liability was not limited to the former mayor. The Santa Rosa chapter of the Active 20-30 Club, a social organization, was also found liable for one of the assaults. The club was ordered to pay $2 million in compensatory damages.

In other news, another high-profile figure with ties to Hollywood made headlines. Harvey Weinstein was sentenced in New York to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting Miriam Haley. Haley had briefly worked on the reality TV show Project Runway, which Weinstein produced.

This sentence followed the overturning of his 2020 conviction and a new jury’s finding of guilt. Weinstein is also awaiting resentencing in California after an appeals court upheld his 2022 convictions for rape and sexual assault and ordered a new sentencing hearing.

Choking Hazards, Listeria Concerns, and Thousands of Vehicles Recalled Over Safety Risks

Practice Area: Product Liability

September saw numerous consumer product recalls over potential health and safety risks. Among the most notable recalls were several children’s products that could pose serious dangers. More than 15,000 squishy toys from the GIHNJSI and OKK Trading brands were recalled because of the small water beads inside them. If swallowed, the beads could cause choking or potentially life-threatening intestinal blockages.

Approximately 22,660 Baby Sesame Street Elmo silicone teething toys were also recalled. This followed four reports of the toy’s black eyes coming loose after being frozen, creating a choking hazard.

Safety concerns extended to household products as well. Friedrich Air Conditioning recalled about 2,000 KÜHL Q and KÜHL S window air conditioners due to a potential motor control board failure that could cause fires and burns. One house fire was reported.

Meanwhile, Hayward Industries recalled approximately 4,600 Universal-HC Series pool heaters. The units could produce high levels of carbon monoxide during operation, posing a risk of serious carbon monoxide poisoning.

Food Recalls Due to Listeria, E. Coli, and Other Hazards

  • Star Meat Delivery recalled approximately 167,639 pounds of beef, pork, and goat products that were sold without the required federal inspection.
  • Prime Line Distributors, Inc. recalled more than 1,500 pounds of guanciale due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
  • Danone USA voluntarily recalled packages of So Delicious Dairy Free Salted Caramel Cluster due to foreign material contamination.
  • Frozen mixed berries sold at Walmart were recalled due to possible E. coli contamination. The recall affected bags of Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend distributed to stores in 16 states.

Additionally, Walmart agreed to pay $16 million to settle allegations that it had sold expired infant formula and over-the-counter medications in California. The statewide settlement, announced by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, also requires additional inventory control measures and training to prevent the sale of expired products.

Ford, Volkswagen, Rivian, and Jeep Recall Thousands of Vehicles Over Fire and Accident Risks

Automakers also announced numerous recalls in September involving defects that could affect the safety of drivers and passengers:

  • 148,663 Ford Mustangs from model years 2024 through 2026 were recalled over a wiring connection issue that could cause a loss of power while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • More than 208,000 Volkswagen and Audi SUVs were recalled over defects that could cause a loss of steering control.
  • Over 98,000 Rivian electric vehicles were recalled due to issues with their rearview cameras.
  • Approximately 97,000 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models were recalled because the roof rack crossbars could detach.
  • More than 223,000 Ford F-150 pickup trucks were recalled over a defect that could increase the risk of fire.
  • Hyundai recalled certain Ioniq 9 SUVs over an issue involving the power-folding seats.

Head-On Crash, Metro Bus Collision, and Hit-and-Run Leave Multiple People Dead or Injured in California

Practice Area: Traffic Accidents

Traffic crashes resulted in serious injuries and fatalities across California in September 2026. Early in the month, a wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision in Santa Clara that killed two people after both vehicles caught fire.

Several people were also injured in a collision involving a car and a Metro bus in Chatsworth. Another fatal crash occurred in Alameda County, where a teenager died following a collision between two vehicles.

The final days of the month brought more serious crashes. In Saratoga, a Tesla incident on the highway led to an investigation into possible drunk driving. The next day, two people died in East Palo Alto in a seven-vehicle collision.

Pedestrians were also among those affected. In El Monte, a vehicle crashed into a Food 4 Less supermarket and struck three people. In South Los Angeles, a boy was killed, and his sister was seriously injured after they were struck in a hit-and-run crash.

Bicycle Accidents in San Jose, Livermore, and Colton Leave Two Dead

Cyclists and e-bike riders were involved in several serious accidents in September:

  • In San Jose, a cyclist was hit by a car, sustaining serious injuries. He later died at the hospital. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the authorities.
  • In Livermore, another cyclist was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene. The victim was taken to a hospital, where she remained hospitalized due to the severity of her injuries.
  • In Colton, a 38-year-old woman riding an electric bicycle collided with an SUV. Emergency services responded to the scene, but she died from her injuries.
