Cannabis Edibles in School, $1.5M for Wrongful Death, Boar’s Head Listeria Lawsuit
California’s October News Round-Up Includes Rising Pedestrian Deaths, School Bus Incidents, and Celebrity Sex Cases
In October 2024, California saw a surge in personal injury lawsuits. Among the most notable cases this month is a multi-state lawsuit against the social media giant TikTok. The suit, which includes California, alleges that the popular video platform is designed to be addictive and harmful to children’s mental health.
In the airline industry, personal injury claims have made headlines as well. A San Francisco resident filed a negligence lawsuit against Alaska Airlines after the tragic death of his French bulldog. The lawsuit alleges that the airline moved him and his dog from a first-class seat to a smaller, less accommodating space, resulting in the dog’s death. Meanwhile, Lufthansa has faced a $4 million fine for alleged discriminatory practices against Jewish passengers
In another story, a former Orange County high school football player reached a $31 million settlement with his school district. The lawsuit stemmed from a traumatic brain injury he suffered during a practice that left him with severe cognitive and emotional damage – a stark reminder of the serious risks associated with youth sports and the responsibility of schools to protect student-athletes.
Finally, Tesla is back in the spotlight. In less than a year, the electric car manufacturer has issued its fifth recall in under a year for its Cybertruck. The latest recall addresses issues with the rear camera, raising questions about Tesla’s safety. This came in the same month that the electric carmaker unveiled its Cybercab. Tesla’s robot taxi will go into production in 2026.

Target, Walmart, ALDI, Publix, or HEB are Among the Supermarkets Affected by Listeria
Foodborne illness is on the rise in the US, with several outbreaks causing severe health risks, including fatalities and hospitalizations. Among the most alarming is the recent increase in listeria cases.
