Boy suffers brain damage from errant throw at Angel Stadium

A suit brought against the Angels alleges the team’s negligence caused Bryson Galaz’ lasting injuries

The new baseball season is sure to feel different for the Galaz family. They are still dealing with the injuries to their then 6-year-old son Bryan caused by an errant throw by a Los Angeles Angels player.

On Sept. 15, 2019, Bryson and his father were walking along the dugout level at Angels Stadium during warm ups when “pitcher Keynan Middleton, who was warming up on the field, threw a ball toward another Angels player who missed the catch,” according to the suit.

The boy’s mother, Beatrice Galaz, alleges in the suit the team is negligent and caused her son’s fractured skull and traumatic brain damage by not having more netting along the side of the field. Galaz argues, “players shouldn’t throw balls during warm ups in areas where spectators could be struck, especially when the team is encouraging fans to arrive early to try to meet players.”

Since Bryson’s injuries, Angel Stadium has extended netting a section beyond the dugout. But not even that would not have prevented the accident, as the boy’s fate showed.

The baseball to the side of the head landed Bryson in the emergency room, where he remained in critical condition for two and a half days.

The family explained that although Bryson, who is now in third grade, continues to do well in school through hard work, medical exams show abnormal brain activity and function. This makes them worry that as Bryson gets older, and school subjects get more complex, his long-term development will start to lag behind.

“We’re grateful that he pulled through, but since that day he has struggled in school,” Galaz, of Anaheim, said in a statement. “He’s simply not the same.”

The Angels have declined to comment, as they say no parties have reached out to them about a suit.
