Pedestrian Fatally Injured in Bakersfield Crash

December 21, 2020 Alan Ahdoot

A fatal traffic incident involving a pedestrian and a vehicle was reported in Bakersfield on Thursday, December 17th. California Highway Patrol was the first responder at the scene. The incident happened at about 11:00 p.m. on Highway 48, near South H Street. The vehicle, a 2012 Ford SUV, was heading west on Highway 48 when the pedestrian suddenly jumped into the path of the SUV. The driver was unable to evade the pedestrian, who was later identified as a Walnut-resident named Steve Alejandro Ibarra, age 28. Ibarra sustained fatal injuries, and by the time paramedics were called to the scene, had already passed away.

Can Pedestrians Be At-Fault for A Car Accident?

Though the expectation for responsibility to ensure that negligence does not occur tends to be higher for drivers, a pedestrian can be considered liable for a car accident if they fail to abide by the applicable traffic laws. Some examples would be pedestrians who do not cross the road on a zebra cross or do not wait until the pedestrian crossing lights come on before choosing to cross the road.
