Over 100 Sickened and 1 Dead in E. Coli Outbreak Linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder

A deadly E. coli outbreak at a McDonald’s restaurant left 34 people hospitalized. The outbreak, which began in mid-September, has now sickened 104 people and caused one death. The victim, an 88-year-old man, died of possible hemolytic uremic syndrome after eating a Quarter Pounder burger. McDonald’s is now facing a class action lawsuit.

Initial investigations by the FDA and CDC traced the source of the contamination to onions supplied by California-based Taylor Farms. After discovering the E. coli O157:H7, the company recalled the affected products. Cases have been reported in 14 states.

Most people infected with the toxin-producing E. coli experience symptoms such as stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and dizziness. In addition, four people have been hospitalized with serious diagnoses. These included problems related to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a kidney disease that causes serious health complications.

One of the most serious cases is that of Kamberlyn Bowler. The 15-year-old nearly died of kidney failure after eating three Quarter Pounder burgers in a week. The student spent ten days on dialysis to save her kidneys. Her family has now filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s in response to the ordeal.

Victims Sue McDonald’s Over E. Coli Outbreak

The first plaintiff to file a lawsuit against McDonald’s over the 2024 E. coli outbreak is Eric Stelly. The man claims he developed gastrointestinal symptoms after eating a Quarter Pounder burger in early October and later tested positive for E. coli. He is seeking more than $50,000 in damages for injuries including nausea, cramps, and bloody stools. The lawsuit against McDonald’s alleges that the company was negligent in handling the product and breached implied warranties.

Candina Rose Craft, another victim, has also contacted a lawyer to sue McDonald’s. Craft says she still has ongoing symptoms after contracting E. coli, including loss of appetite and weakness.

In addition, two consumers have filed a proposed class action lawsuit over the E. coli outbreak. Amanda McCray and William Michael Kraft are seeking more than $5 million in compensation for consumers nationwide sickened by E. coli. The plaintiffs allege that McDonald’s failed in its duty to ensure food safety, leading to the outbreak.

Many E. coli victims experience symptoms such as stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, which can often be mistaken for other illnesses, delaying proper diagnosis. It can take up to three weeks to know if a person has contracted an E. coli outbreak.

If you’ve eaten at McDonald’s in the last few months and have had health problems, don’t hesitate to get tested. If you have been affected by E. coli O157:H7 bacteria, you may be entitled to compensation.
