Trader Joe’s Appeals $10.8M Fall Case as Taco Bell Cyclospora Outbreak Exceeds 11,000 Cases

One of the month’s top news stories involves Trader Joe’s. The case stems from a slip-and-fall accident at a Modesto store that left Zahra Gharraee with serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury that impacted her ability to work.
In 2025, a jury found Trader Joe’s negligent and initially awarded $23.5 million in damages. The amount was later reduced to approximately $10.8 million. In August 2026, the Court of Appeals ruled that Trader Joe’s had filed on time, allowing the company to move forward with its appeal in the California personal injury case.
There were also new developments in the Cyclospora outbreak initially linked to lettuce served at some Taco Bell restaurants. According to published reports, Yum! Brands, Taco Bell’s parent company, was reportedly aware of the possible connection to some locations nearly two weeks before publicly disclosing the situation.
The investigation later expanded beyond Taco Bell. The FDA traced the outbreak to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico and distributed to multiple food service and retail locations. By August 27, the outbreak had grown to 11,458 reported illnesses across 20 states, including cases involving people who had eaten at Taco Bell.
In California, four families sued the city of Chico after four children contracted E. coli O157 while swimming at Sycamore Pool and the Five-Mile Recreation Area in the summer of 2025. Three of the children developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, and two required dialysis and blood transfusions during their hospitalization.
The families allege that the city failed to conduct required water testing or adequately warn swimmers. The city denies the allegations. The case returned to the spotlight in August, when new tests detected elevated E. coli levels and authorities recommended against swimming at Sycamore Pool.
Oakland to Pay $17M Over Police Chase as New Cases Raise Questions About Use of Force

The city of Oakland has agreed to pay $17 million to the family of Lolomanaia “Lolo” Soakai, who was killed in an unauthorized police chase in 2022. The incident began when two officers pursued a 19-year-old driver suspected of participating in an illegal sideshow despite not having authorization to initiate the chase. The driver crashed into several vehicles, sending a motorcycle flying and fatally striking Soakai. His mother was also injured and suffered a broken back.
Another controversial case involved Daniel Meltvedt, a young man with autism who was fatally shot by Irvine police. In August, authorities released body camera footage showing the moments leading up to the shooting.
Meltvedt had called 911 during a mental health crisis in which he expressed suicidal thoughts. The footage shows him holding a knife and repeatedly asking officers to shoot him as his father witnessed the encounter. “I thought they would come to help him, but instead they killed him,” his father later told the Los Angeles Times. The family questions why officers were unable to subdue him using other means.
August also brought new developments in the case of Keith Porter Jr., who was shot and killed by an off-duty ICE agent in Northridge in December 2025. His family asked the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to present the case to a grand jury. The District Attorney’s Office is still evaluating whether to file charges against the agent. The defense maintains that the agent acted in self-defense, but Porter’s family disputes that account.

The lawsuit alleged that the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) vehicle entered an East Hollywood intersection without stopping while Danbom had a green light.
Another incident involving a government vehicle occurred in Van Nuys, where three people were injured in a collision between a California Highway Patrol (CHP) SUV and a sedan. The CHP vehicle then crashed into a wall.
