This year, plane crashes have sadly become all too common. After the shocking crash between a commercial airliner and a military Black Hawk helicopter in early January, the news was hit again with another tragedy: a tourist helicopter flying over the Hudson River in New York crashed in broad daylight, killing all six people on board, including the pilot.

While tourist flights are usually considered safe, these types of accidents remind us of how vulnerable we are when mistakes happen, technical problems occur, or negligence occurs. The recent statistics on helicopter and airplane accidents are eye-opening. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), there have been at least 87 aircraft accidents in the U.S. so far in 2025. Out of those, 33 were fatal, with at least 130 deaths.

In this blog, we’ll look at the recent Hudson River accident and discuss the risks associated with tourist flights. We’ll also explore the types of compensation victims may be eligible for, as well as the legal consequences companies may face after such accidents.

At Adamson Ahdoot, we understand how difficult it can be to deal with the pain, confusion, and emotional impact of an aviation accident. What Happened in the Hudson River Helicopter Accident?

The tragic events unfolded on April 10, 2025, when a pilot and a Spanish family of five boarded a sightseeing helicopter to fly over Manhattan. Among the passengers were a senior Siemens executive, his wife, and their three young children, ages 4, 8, and 10. The family was visiting New York to celebrate one of the children’s birthdays. The pilot, a 36-year-old US Navy SEAL veteran, had more than 800 hours of flying experience.

At around 3 p.m., they boarded a Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV helicopter operated by New York Helicopter Tours. The aircraft took off from the southern Manhattan heliport for a scenic flight over the city. According to radar data, the helicopter first headed north before turning south again. After about 18 minutes in the air, while flying over the Hudson River, the helicopter reportedly suffered a rupture in both the tail and main rotor.

Witnesses captured the terrifying moment on video: after the malfunction, the aircraft lost control and plunged at a steep 45-degree angle into the cold waters of the Hudson near Newport.

The impact was devastating: all six people on board lost their lives. Although rescue teams arrived within minutes, the helicopter had already sunk.

Authorities Investigate the Causes of the Incident

More than two weeks have passed since the tragic helicopter crash, but authorities have yet to release any final conclusions. Although the investigation is still in its early stages, early reports point to possible mechanical failure, human error, or even a collision with a drone.

New York Helicopter Tours, the company that operated the flight, has publicly stated that the exact cause of the accident is still unknown. According to CEO Michael Roth, the pilot had radioed before the crash to report that he needed to land for fuel. But the return trip to the heliport—which should have taken only about three minutes—never happened. “Twenty minutes later, he still hadn’t arrived,” Roth told reporters.

After the tragedy, the company announced it would permanently shut down its operations. Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered an urgent review of helicopter tour licenses and operations.

Risks of Tourist Helicopter Flights

Helicopter tours are an exciting and unique experience. They offer breathtaking views that few other modes of transportation can’t match. But like any aviation activity, they come with their own risks. Although these flights are highly regulated, there has been a noticeable rise in fatal aircraft incidents in recent years. While many helicopter accidents are caused by unforeseen circumstances, statistics highlight the leading causes of these incidents.

Here are the most common causes of private or sightseeing helicopter accidents in California:

  • Mechanical Failures: The FAA has identified mechanical failures as one of the leading causes of tourist helicopter accidents. In fact, the agency reports that nearly 40% of incidents are linked to engine, main rotor, or transmission issues.
  • Weather Conditions: Weather can quickly become a dangerous factor for sightseeing flights. Sudden changes, such as dense fog, heavy rain, or high winds, can seriously affect navigation. Especially over urban areas like Los Angeles or San Francisco.
  • Human Error: Lack of experience, pilot fatigue, or unfamiliarity with the route can lead to poor decision-making or incorrect maneuvers during the flight.
  • Company Negligence: Ignoring weight limits, failing to follow proper safety protocols, or skipping preventive maintenance can directly contribute to accidents.
  • External Agents: In recent years, interference from drones and other unmanned aircraft has become a growing threat. In cities with heavy air traffic, drones can pose a serious risk to the safety of helicopter tour flights.

Victim Compensation Rights in Aviation Accidents

After a helicopter crash, it’s important to seek accountability and protect your rights. As with any personal injury case, victims and their families have the right to seek justice and fair compensation. Those responsible for the incident must face legal consequences and be held accountable for the physical, emotional, and financial harm they caused.

In California, both state and federal laws protect victims of helicopter accidents, whether the flights were private or tourist-related. Depending on the circumstances, liability may fall on several parties—from the tour operator to the helicopter manufacturer or even the airport authorities.

Determining the exact cause of a helicopter crash requires technical knowledge and legal expertise. That’s why it’s crucial to work with a lawyer who specializes in helicopter accident cases. These professionals will delve into every aspect of the incident, working with experts, surveyors, investigators, and aviation technicians to determine liability and maximize the compensation you deserve. They will guide you through every step of the legal process, from the initial investigation to the final resolution of your case.

Having the support of an experienced helicopter crash attorney can make a significant difference in helping victims and their families secure justice and the financial recovery they deserve.

Helicopter Crash Cases in California

California and its surrounding areas have been the scene of numerous helicopter and small aircraft crashes, particularly those involving tourist flights. Popular areas such as Los Angeles and Napa Valley attract thousands of visitors each year, resulting in a high volume of air traffic along the West Coast.

One of the most widely known helicopter accidents in California was the tragic incident involving NBA star Kobe Bryant. In January 2020, Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others lost their lives when their helicopter crashed in Calabasas. Investigators concluded that dense fog was a determining factor in the accident. The pilot’s spatial disorientation significantly contributed to the tragedy.

In August 2023, Riverside County witnessed another devastating event when two helicopters collided while battling a wildfire in Cabazon. This tragic incident claimed the lives of two firefighters and a pilot. The collision was attributed to coordination issues and limited visibility under extreme conditions.

More recently, in February 2024, five U.S. Marines lost their lives when a military helicopter crashed in a mountainous area near San Diego. Preliminary investigations suggested a combination of poor weather and mechanical failure as the likely causes.

Unfortunately, California experiences multiple helicopter and plane accidents each month. Emergency landings, particularly involving private aircraft, are not uncommon. For instance, in November 2024, a small plane was forced to make an emergency landing on Highway 85 in the South Bay area.
