Two people were left in serious condition and seven others were injured in a traffic accident involving a Los Angeles International Airport shuttle bus last Thursday, July 21.

According to LAX police, the accident happened around 12:21 p.m. local when the driver of the bus “miscalculated a turn and collided with a pillar at the lower level of Circle Way and Center Way.”

Airport spokesperson Victoria Spillabotti explained the bus was traveling from the taxi and ride-hailing services parking lot on its way back to the main terminal with its 23 passengers and driver. This is when the front of the bus struck a pole in a “tightly curved section of the roadway.”

The collision happened near Terminal 1 on the airport’s lower level, which serves Southwest Airlines. It affected traffic around LAX for approximately two hours and forced the shutdown of the eastbound side of the upper-level return area to allow for emergency services to access the crash site.

“Firefighters conducted triage operations to determine the full extent of injuries,” Spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department Margaret Stewart explained. All nine people injured were taken to the hospital to receive treatment for “minor, non-life-threatening injuries,” she added.

Fortunately, no pedestrians were injured in the accident. It does, however, illustrate the dangers that can happen in a common carrier or shuttle accident.
