Los Angeles Dodgers Face Multiple Lawsuits After Security Allegedly Attacked Fans

April 21, 2022 María López Garcia

The Los Angeles Dodgers face three lawsuits accusing security personnel of false imprisonment, battery, assault, civil rights violation, and emotional anguish against fans attending three different home games. The suits were filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on April 12th.

The first incident, which occurred on August 17th, 2021, took place in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium. According to court documents, Salvador Mota was attempting to leave the stadium with his wife when security asked him to exit his vehicle. After exiting his vehicle, Mota says he was battered and violently assaulted by security officers without provocation.

Mota suffered severe shoulder, leg, eye, and face injuries in the incident and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The lawsuit does not detail the events leading up to the alleged attack or why Mota was asked to exit his car. Mota said of the sworn and non-sworn officers working at the stadium – “Basically, they’ve become bullies…”

The second incident happened almost a month later at a September 14th game. Karen Osorio’s daughter, daughter’s friend, and grandson had their cell phones ” violently grabbed…” out of their hands by a uniformed LAPD officer. Allegedly, the officer accused the three of conducting illegal activities, which were not specified to Osorio.

After questioning the officer as to what he was referring to, Osorio says she was surrounded and attacked by security personnel. She suffered multiple abrasions and bruises on her face, arm, chest, and knee because of the attack. She was then handcuffed and arrested. No criminal charges were filed, however.

An October 3rd game against the Milwaukee Brewers was the scene of the third incident. Adam Villa, who was with his wife and daughter, was approached by security because of complaints regarding his “enthusiastic language.” Although Villa claims he agreed to stop using offensive language, he was allegedly surrounded and attacked by six security employees.

A video capturing the moments leading up to the attack reportedly has audio of an officer asking the family to leave and then Villa flinching when the officer touches his shoulder. The video also shows at least one officer hitting Villa repeatedly.

The encounter left Villa suffering from back, head, and neck injuries. He also had large chunks of hair pulled out. Villa’s wife sustained injuries in the incident as well.

Reportedly, the Los Angeles Dodgers have tightened security after being found partially liable for the 2011 brutal attack of Giants fan Bryan Stow by two Dodgers fans in the stadium parking lot. The opening day attack left Stow in a coma for months. The Dodgers’ organization has said they do not comment on ongoing litigation.
