Deaths in Defective Pools, 80 LAPD Complaints, and Brain Death at 7-Eleven
California’s July News Round-Up Features Spike in Assaults, Sexual Offenses, and Fatal Accidents
The festive atmosphere of July, with its holidays, celebrations, and social gatherings, often coincides with a rise in accidents, and this year was no exception. Over the Fourth of July weekend alone, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported 68 traffic fatalities, many of them alcohol-related.
Fireworks-related tragedies also made headlines. An explosion at an illegally operated pyrotechnics facility claimed seven lives and triggered an 80-acre wildfire. In Orange County, an eight-year-old girl was fatally injured when a neighbor ignited illegal fireworks.
Negligence in schools also had legal consequences. The El Segundo Unified School District was ordered to pay $1 million in damages after allegedly failing to prevent repeated bullying incidents. The lawsuit argued that inadequate supervision had caused the student significant emotional distress.
A major product recall also made headlines. More than 5.2 million inflatable pools were recalled following the tragic drowning of nine children. The pools, sold under brand names like Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup, were available at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Amazon.
The community was also shocked by a horrific train accident. A 24-year-old surf instructor lost his arm after being struck by a train while riding an electric bicycle near the tracks. The victim stated that there were no warning signs before the impact.
Lastly, a man died after being mauled by two dogs in a residential backyard in Lancaster.

In particular, there has been a surge in alcohol-related car crashes and motorcycle collisions, as well as the negligent use of fireworks, resulting in a troubling spike in preventable injuries and fatalities.
Beyond traffic incidents, reports of sexual abuse, police misconduct, hate crimes, and a rise in general violence dominated the month’s headlines, raising growing concerns about public safety. Meanwhile, dangerous and defective consumer products continue to cause serious injuries across the state.

Oakland and San Bernardino Shootings, Brain Death at a Hollywood 7-Eleven, and Cardi B Assault Lawsuit
Area of Practice: Assault and Battery
We begin this month’s roundup with news of several alarming incidents of violence reported across California. In early July, Oakland recorded its 37th homicide of the year following a fatal shooting in the San Antonio neighborhood. The incident was initially classified as an aggravated assault that escalated into murder. Although this figure is still concerning, it reflects a slight improvement on the same period in 2024, when the authorities had already investigated 47 homicides.
In another disturbing case, two San Bernardino residents were arrested by the FBI for allegedly stalking their victims for weeks before opening fire in Yorba Linda. According to the authorities, the victims had received repeated threats via phone calls and letters prior to the shooting.
Further south, a 7-Eleven employee in Hollywood was declared clinically brain dead after allegedly being brutally beaten by the store’s manager. According to the victim’s family, the assault resulted in severe traumatic brain injuries. They have announced their intention to pursue legal action against the franchise.
Even public figures were not exempt from assault allegations this month. Rapper Cardi B is facing a personal injury lawsuit for assault and negligence after allegedly throwing a microphone at an audience member during a 2023 concert. The plaintiff claims the act was sudden, excessive, and unjustified, causing physical injury, emotional distress, and public humiliation.
California Law Enforcement Under Fire: Violence, Sex Abuse, and Over 80 Complaints Filed
Practice Area: Police Misconduct
Ongoing police misconduct and excessive force remain serious concerns in California. One of the most troubling incidents occurred in San Bernardino, where a man with mental health issues died in the hospital after being repeatedly punched by two police officers. The victim’s family said he suffered from schizophrenia but was not violent, accusing the police of excessive force and a lack of adequate protocols for handling people in crisis.
Meanwhile, the LAPD is facing intense scrutiny amid ongoing investigations into more than 80 complaints of misconduct stemming from recent protests. Over half of the allegations involve excessive force.
Elsewhere in San Bernardino County, a significant settlement was reached in a sexual abuse case involving the Redlands Police Department. The city has agreed to pay $1.2 million to settle a complaint filed by Julie Alvaro-Salcido, a former fingerprint technician. According to her lawsuit, she was sexually exploited by then–Deputy Police Chief Mike Reiss in a relationship marked by coercion and professional manipulation.
This case is not an isolated incident. In 2021, two female officers sued the city for preferential treatment tied to sexual relationships, receiving a $1.7 million settlement. In April 2023, a forensic specialist filed another lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct by Reiss and Sergeant Kyle Alexander. Later that year, Deputy Chief Travis Martinez also filed a retaliation lawsuit after reporting Reiss’s inappropriate behavior.
Delta Pilot, Firefighter, Professor, and Samsung Executive Face Sexual Charges
Practice Area: Sexual Abuse and Harassment
California has recently experienced a worrying increase in sex crime cases involving individuals in positions of trust and authority. Many victims, including minors, have suffered severe physical and emotional trauma as a result.
One of the most alarming incidents was the arrest of a Delta Airlines pilot at a California airport on charges of committing sexual offenses against children.
In another case, a former East Bay area firefighter was sentenced to five years in prison for child abuse, shocking a community that had once seen him as a model public servant.
Another deeply troubling case involved Joshua Alfaro, a music teacher from Monterey County who received a 30-year prison sentence for committing lewd acts against minors.
Meanwhile, in San Jose, former Samsung executive Stephen Michael Gonzales was sentenced to ten years in prison for multiple sexual assaults committed between 2013 and 2018. He was found guilty of rape and other serious crimes against at least four women.
Finally, a San Leandro man was charged with sexually abusing a 15-year-old he met through a mobile game. This case underscores the growing risk of adult-minor contact on digital platforms, raising questions about potential legal liability for negligence or inadequate protections in such apps.
Fires, Contaminated Meats, and Vehicle Failures Prompt Major Recalls
Practice Area: Defective Products
This month’s roundup of defective product alerts includes several major recalls that raise serious safety concerns for consumers in California.
One notable recall was issued by Frigidaire for over 600,000 mini refrigerators sold on Amazon and Walmart due to fire and burn hazards. There have been at least 26 reported incidents, including two cases of smoke inhalation injuries and property damage exceeding $700,000.
Additionally, Pura Scents recalled over 850,000 diffuser covers due to choking hazards. The covers can easily detach, posing a significant ingestion risk to young children.
In the food industry, the FDA issued several alerts in July regarding mislabeled or contaminated products:
- Gaiser’s European Style Provision Inc. recalled approximately 144,000 pounds of lunch meat after discovering that the meat content did not match the labeling.
- A coffee brand sold at Costco and Target recalled its capsules due to defective seals.
- Rich’s Ice Cream Co. recalled over 100,000 ice cream bars due to potential Listeria contamination.
Vehicle manufacturers also faced scrutiny this month:
- Nissan recalled over 480,000 vehicles due to the risk of critical engine failure.
- Ford announced two major recalls. One targets 850,000 vehicles with faulty fuel pumps. The second recall affects 200,000 vehicles due to software errors that could raise the risk of crashes.
- Stellantis recalled over 120,000 vehicles due to faulty head restraints that could malfunction in a collision.
Jordan Addison DUI, Fatal Wrong-Way Crashes, and Illegal Racing Plague California Roads in July
Practice Area: Traffic Accidents
July 2025 brought a wave of tragic traffic accidents across California, resulting in multiple fatalities and serious personal injury cases, many involving pedestrians.
In San Jose, a woman was struck near the airport and died days later in the hospital. Another pedestrian was killed on I-280 near Highway 17. In Oakland, a hit-and-run driver fatally struck a pedestrian; police later arrested the suspect.
Several crashes were tied to alcohol. One of the most high-profile cases involved NFL player Jordan Addison, who recently settled a DUI charge after being arrested for falling asleep at the wheel of his Rolls-Royce. In a separate incident, a drunk driver traveling the wrong way in San Jose caused a deadly head-on collision.
The most devastating event occurred in Petaluma, where a group of minors in a stolen vehicle fled from the police. The car overturned while traveling the wrong way, ejecting all four occupants. A 14-year-old boy died at the scene.
Other major incidents included:
- A street race on a Los Angeles freeway ended in a two-vehicle crash, fortunately with no major injuries.
- In Riverside County, a driver was killed after getting trapped beneath a disabled truck.
- In Poway, a multi-vehicle collision on State Route 67 left five people dead and sparked a wildfire. A speeding driver traveling the wrong way hit two vehicles, pushing one of them over a cliff into a ravine.
Tesla Driver Accused of Intentionally Killing Motorcyclist
Practice Area: Motorcycle and Bicycle Accidents
Since the start of the season, motorcycle and bicycle accidents have increased significantly, likely due to the warm weather, summer vacations, and the desire to spend more time outdoors. This worrying trend underscores the urgent need for all road users to exercise heightened caution.
One of the most shocking incidents occurred in Chula Vista, where a Tesla driver intentionally struck a motorcyclist. Authorities confirmed the crash was intentional, and the motorcyclist died at the scene.
In another tragic incident in Brentwood, a motorist stopped at an intersection was rear-ended by a speeding driver. Authorities later arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI.
In Hayward, two people riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle—ages 61 and 59—were killed in a head-on collision with a Tesla driven by an 18-year-old woman. Despite wearing helmets, both victims were ejected upon impact and died instantly.
Tragedy also struck in Taft, where a motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a truck.
Bicyclists have not been spared either. In San Rafael, Christopher Brignetti, a well-known cycling coach at Terra Linda High School, was fatally struck while riding his bike through the intersection of Freitas Parkway and Lea Drive. His unexpected death has deeply affected the Bay Area’s education and sports communities.
Finally, in North Hollywood, a bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash. Authorities continue to search for the responsible driver.
