Man Killed in 7-Car Collision

The father of two was an uninvolved bystander when his car was struck

An innocent man was killed as a result of a high-speed chase near Watts that involved a seven-car crash last Thursday, July 14.

In a chase that lasted less than a minute, 37-year-old Alexis Covarrubias was killed when he was struck while driving an uninvolved vehicle.

“It was 40 seconds or less,” LASD Assistant Sheriff of Patrol Operations Bruce Chase reported. “They actually hadn’t even caught up to the vehicle yet to make a decision on whether to back of or continue the pursuit.”

The suspects, 14 and 15 years old, were driving a reportedly stolen Kia Sportage despite not being old enough to operate a vehicle. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the pair were allegedly under the influence of alcohol in the Kia, which had been stolen from Compton the week before.

Deputies were initially forced to give chase to the Kia for reckless driving when the car crashed into various uninvolved vehicles in the 11600 block of S. Central Avenue in South Los Angeles at the off-ramp of the 105 Freeway.

Deputies detained both negligent minors after Los Angeles County Fire Department crews were forced to use hydraulic tools to remove the pair from the vehicle. They were promptly handcuffed and given medical attention at a nearby hospital, where they are said to be in critical condition.

Alex McGinnis, the father of one of the drivers who had their car smashed into by the suspects, explained how his daughter told him of the horrific scene. “She told me that she was driving along, and all of a sudden cars and metal and all kinds of stuff just started flying everywhere.”

Officials were forced to close the off-ramp for several hours.

Covarrubias left behind two small children, according to his family. They’ve set up a GoFundMe account to help with funeral costs.
