Teen loses toes to drunk driver accident

Mauricio Porcayo was enjoying a night out with friends when they were struck by an intoxicated driver on May 20; one week before graduation. The Latino teen was seriously hurt in the accident.

Porcayo was transferred to the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center with several parts of his legs broken, while his friends suffered minor injuries. Doctors confirmed that Porcayo will have to have several toes amputated.

The teenagers were enjoying an evening out, hanging off the bed of a truck parked near Valley Boulevard and Bassetdale Avenue in the San Gabriel Valley. As they were having dinner, within seconds, a Toyota struck the back of the truck. The driver of the vehicle, Jesus Ziranda, was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Lucia Marquez, the teen’s mother, told Telemundo 52 and NBC that the tragedy has had a significant impact on her son, who only had a week to wait till he graduated. “Unfortunately, my boy is not going to be able to be at his graduation. He will not be able to walk with his friends, as he dreamed,” she said.

The family and friends of the young Latino are disappointed, as the Ziranda bailed out of jail the next day after posting a $100,000 bond. “This person has to pay for what he did to my son,” Marquez said.

The following Monday morning, Basset High School classmates turned out for Ziranda’s arraignment with signs demanding justice for their injured classmate.

“It is not fair that the person who caused this accident is out walking free without a scratch and my son is here bedridden and unable to get up,” said Porcayo’s mother.

Doctors have confirmed that Porcayo will be able to walk again, but are unsure if he will be able to play soccer again, his true passion.
