Authorities received a call for a hit-and-run at the intersection of Towne and East Vernon Avenues in Los Angeles last Thursday, July 28. When police arrived on the scene, the body of a male in his 40s was found lifeless in the middle of the street.

However, what appeared to be a hit-and-run victim could have been part of a more complicated and mysterious accident.

According to information provided by the Los Angeles Police Department, the driver of a vehicle called 911 around 1:30 a.m., reporting a hit-and-run. The woman informed the authorities that a male pedestrian’s body was already lying on the ground and when she realized it, she had no margin to avoid the impact.

The driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with police, stated that a black pickup truck had previously driven over the body, but fled the scene.

While authorities initially thought that the driver of the first vehicle was responsible for the death, when paramedics arrived, they found that the body had a gunshot wound.

Throughout the day, medical examiners determined that the victim had been fatally shot several times. Police discovered a toy gun that shoots plastic bullets tucked into the waistband of the victim’s pants. Due to the bizarre occurrence, homicide investigators decided to take over the case.

Despite being cooperative throughout, police interviewed the woman who made the call and had her take a sobriety test, ultimately determining that she had no fault in the matter.

LAPD did not release the identity of the victim, but did confirm that he could’ve been a homeless person who lived in a nearby encampment. Although no arrests have been made at this time, authorities are looking for two suspects responsible for the crime.
