Dog Bite Awareness Week: California Remains Top State for Mail Carrier Dog Bites

June 22, 2021 Alan Ahdoot

During 2021 National Dog Bite Awareness Week, the USPS reported that Over 5,800 postal employees were attacked by dogs last year. California remains the #1 state in the country for dog bites among mail carriers. During the COVID-19 quarantines and lockdown in 2020, many people shifted to online shopping. USPS, UPS, FED-EX and Amazon delivery drivers were very busy. Delivery drivers are often greeted by dogs, and not all are friendly. Along with children, mail carriers are a top victim for aggressive dogs.

According to a report released this month, 59 USPS employees were attacked by dogs in Los Angeles in 2020. Statewide, 782 employees were attacked by dogs. Dog bites can cause permanent scarring, and temporary or permanent injury. The experience of being bitten by a dog can be physically and emotionally devastating. Victims may also need plastic surgery.

Beware Of Dog Sign

Delivery drivers in California have the same legal status as family, friends, or acquaintances who are invited guests. Unfortunately, many dog owners do not take steps to protect delivery drivers from their dogs like they would for a friend coming over to visit. Some people are not bitten but are seriously injured when being jumped on and knocked to the ground by a large dog. Knockdown injuries can cause broken hips, broken ribs, and other fall-related injuries.

In California, the owner of the dog is “strictly liable” for injuries caused by their dog, whether or not a dog is known to be aggressive. Mail carriers and delivery drivers are well-advised to contact an experienced and knowledgeable California dog bite lawyer as soon as possible after a dog attack. An attorney can help obtain fair compensation for medical expenses, lost earnings, pain and suffering, and other related damages in a personal injury claim against the dog owner’s insurance policy.
