Savaii Seau, Brother of Football Legend Junior Seau, Tragically Killed in San Diego Head-on Collision

Authorities confirmed Wednesday the tragic death of Savaii Seau, who was the older brother of San Diego Chargers football legend, Junior Seau. According to California Highway Patrol officials, the deadly crash happened at approximately 2:10 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when Seau’s Audi A5 collided head-on with a dump truck in the Lakeside area of San Diego.

Although the investigation is ongoing, authorities report that Seau’s car drifted (for unknown reasons) into oncoming traffic as he was heading north on Los Coches Road in Lakeside.

It appears Seau was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. A female passenger in the Audi and the driver of the truck did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Head-on collisions are one of the deadliest types of car accidents in the nation, reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Although head-on crashes only account for 2% of all vehicle crashes nationwide, they account for more than 10% of vehicle fatalities. Some other interesting stats about head-on crashes are:

• Head on crashes are more likely to occur on rural roads with two-lane highways.

• Of the head-on collisions reported in a single year, only 4% were caused by lane passing.

• One of the most common causes of head-on crashes is failure to negotiate a curve.
